Earth Art Festivals
Working with the Earth Festivals Artistically
Earth Art Festivals are a way to try to stay in attunement with the yearly round. We love to hike in nature, to contemplate sunsets and to travel. We long to connect with the natural world, especially now with constant news updates we can seek more ways to reconnect to the natural world.
Artists have always paid attention to the rhythms of life, and the natural world. We have countless paintings of landscapes, trees, flowers. Many artists paint the same place through the shifting seasons.
But there is a entire troupe of compatriots who also paint the Earth Festivals artistically. I have been doing it for years, and created an online group and we have created throughout the last two years. The above video was September 2018, and we focused on Michael, the archangel who guards the turning into Fall.
Everyone is welcome to work on whatever spiritual or nature connection they want to celebrate. In this online art class- a working creative endeavor - we each work on our own and create one or two pieces honoring Earth Festivals. At summer solstice we have pagans, Buddhists, Christians, wiccan's and shamans.
This year I am opening this for the public.
One of my favorites is an abstract artist, Tony O'Malley. Over his forty odd years of working, he has a large compilation of earth-art-festivals.
Everyone comes to their art table differently. Some come knowing the concept from start to finish. Others want to work out of the color into form. Some want to be a tabula rasa and start in a Zen state of nothingness. And others come filled with devotion to an idea-l that feels as if It (Ideal) is calling the artist to come to the sacred altar of the Art Easel or Table and co-create together.
For me, every Earth Festival is a time of gearing up emotionally, physically, by strengthening my thinking, diving back into research and filling my heart-soul up with the images, stories, myths and legends from all over the world about this time.
If I can inwardly strengthen myself, and create a space of emptiness. Earth of ours turns into it's sacred cycles of solstice and equinox I also can re-enter this cycle a different individual human being, continually striving.
Rudolf Steiner and many other spiritual thinkers/devotees and great artists, have discussed this creating out of nothingness as the penultimate journey of the soul to God. To empty the inner chambers so the Truth of the Being/Cycle/Nature can enter into the individual and bring the Light of that Truth-Being inside the space prepared for it.
I think this is one of the toughest things to do, because we are all filled with our, "I know this!", "I know that!" and "I believe this!" and, "I believe that!" and hopefully not, "They are doing it WRONG! I KNOW the RIGHT way!" kind of thing. Me too!
Our opinions fill us up. The Truth of the Being considered (in any image we are engaged in) is not able to come into our perception, because We Know. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. You have to try it yourself to see if it's so.
